Sometimes an assignment starts out quite simply and develops into a really nice project. That was also the case with this corporate photography in Basel: the general agency of Vaudoise Assurances wanted to present its team professionally for a publicity report in the Basler Zeitung. What followed was a shoot that showed us once again why preparation and local knowledge make all the difference in corporate photography.
The order
Vaudoise Assurances contacted us for a publicity report in the Basler Zeitung. The aim was to photograph the team of the General Agency Basel in front of their agency at St. Jakobs-Strasse 3. What was initially planned as a small shoot with two group photos turned into a lively session with 15 people in front of the camera. The preparation
As a specialist in corporate photography in Basel, I know that good preparation is the key to strong results. I was on site at 1:30 pm, a full hour before the team. I used this time to evaluate the location, assess the lighting situation and set everything up before the first employees arrived.
Natural light was a decisive factor. At 2:30 pm, the sun is in the southwest and illuminates the façade of the Vaudoise directly and frontally. Perfect conditions for a group photo outdoors, without flash, without harsh shadows, without artificial lighting. If you know the sun and work with it instead of against it, you save time and gain quality. This is one of the great advantages of having done corporate photography in Basel for years and knowing the city, its streets and its light.
The shoot – a real challenge
Coordinating 15 people in front of the camera at the same time is a challenge in itself. Everyone looks in a different direction, someone blinks, someone laughs at the wrong moment. On St. Jakobs-Strasse in Basel, there is another factor to consider: Traffic. At 2:30 p.m., one of Basel’s busiest streets was bustling with traffic. Cars, streetcars, bicycles and pedestrians in constant use.
I positioned myself on the opposite side of the street, around 10 meters away from the team, to get the best possible shot of the entire façade. Behind me were vehicles and passers-by, in front of me 15 people who all had to look into the camera at the right moment. With patience, the right timing between the vehicles and clear instructions to the team, we managed it. Several series, several attempts until everything was just right. This is corporate photography in the city: lively, not perfectly plannable and therefore interesting. The result proves us right.
The result
Two professional group photos that showcase the team of the General Agency Basel in a strong and authentic way. A horizontal landscape format and a vertical portrait format were supplied to give Vaudoise maximum flexibility for use in the Basler Zeitung and other channels. The images were delivered quickly, easily and directly downloadable via our private online gallery, without any waiting time or complicated handover.
